The Tamil calendar is a solar sidereal calendar used by Tamil-speaking communities across Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, and other parts of the Tamil diaspora. Unlike the Gregorian (English) calendar which is purely solar, the Tamil calendar is based on the position of the sun as it moves through the 12 zodiac signs (Rasi). Each Tamil month begins when the sun enters a new zodiac sign.
The Tamil calendar year is known as a Samvatsara — a 60-year cycle where each year has a unique name. The current Tamil year is Sarvari / Vikrama / Shubhakrit. The Tamil New Year (Puthandu) falls on April 14 each year (Chithirai 1), coinciding with the solar transition (Mesha Sankranti).
The Tamil calendar has 12 months, each named after a star constellation: Chithirai (Apr–May), Vaikasi (May–Jun), Aani (Jun–Jul), Aadi (Jul–Aug), Aavani (Aug–Sep), Purattasi (Sep–Oct), Aippasi (Oct–Nov), Karthigai (Nov–Dec), Margazhi (Dec–Jan), Thai (Jan–Feb), Maasi (Feb–Mar), and Panguni (Mar–Apr).
Each month has religious and cultural significance. For example, Margazhi is considered the most auspicious month for devotion and temple festivals, while Aadi is significant for Goddess worship (Aadi Perukku and Aadi Velli).
