TrueTamil.in's Elections section provides a comprehensive reference on India's state legislative assemblies, including the names of current Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) for each constituency, upcoming election schedules, and historical election result data across all states and union territories.
An MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) is a representative elected by voters of a specific constituency to serve in a state's Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha). India follows a parliamentary system of democracy at both the national and state levels. While Members of Parliament (MPs) represent constituencies in the Lok Sabha at the national level, MLAs represent constituencies in the state legislature.
Each Indian state is divided into a fixed number of assembly constituencies. Tamil Nadu, for example, has 234 assembly constituencies, each electing one MLA. The total strength of Tamil Nadu's Legislative Assembly is therefore 234 seats. The party or coalition that wins a majority (118+ seats) forms the state government, and its leader is sworn in as Chief Minister.
India uses the First Past the Post (FPTP) electoral system for both Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections. Under this system, each constituency elects one representative, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins — even if they don't get an absolute majority. Elections are conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI), an independent constitutional body that manages the entire election process including voter registration, candidate nomination, polling, and result declaration.
State elections are held every 5 years, though they can be called earlier if the government loses a confidence vote or the assembly is dissolved by the Governor on the advice of the Council of Ministers or the President of India.
The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly (Tamil: தமிழ்நாடு சட்டமன்றம்) is a unicameral legislature with 234 elected members. The assembly was last constituted in May 2021, when the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by M. K. Stalin, won 133 seats to form the government. The next Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are scheduled for 2026.
Key constituencies in Tamil Nadu include Chennai Central, Coimbatore South, Madurai Central, Salem West, Cuddalore, Vellore, Tirunelveli, and many others spread across 38 districts.
