Understanding Indian Train Numbers

Every train in India has a unique 5-digit train number assigned by Indian Railways. The first digit indicates the train category and zone. For example, numbers starting with 1 indicate trains in the Central Railway zone, 2 indicates trains under South Central Railway, and 6 indicates trains under Southern Railway and South Western Railway. The Rajdhani Express trains are numbered in the 12xxx and 22xxx series. Vande Bharat Express trains fall in the 22xxx series. Local and suburban EMU trains in Chennai use the 4xxxx (40xxx) series.

Popular Tamil Nadu Train Routes

Some of the most frequently searched trains running to and from Tamil Nadu include the Chennai–Coimbatore Intercity Express (12243/12244), the Chennai–Madurai Vaigai Express (12635/12636), the Chennai–Bangalore Shatabdi Express (12027/12028), the Chennai–Mumbai Mail (11041/11042), the Kanyakumari Express (16381/16382) connecting Chennai with the southern tip of India, and the Vande Bharat Express (20601/20602) between Chennai and Coimbatore via Salem. For pilgrim travel, the Rameswaram Express (16101/16102) is widely used by devotees visiting the Rameswaram temple.

Train Classes Explained

Indian Railways offers multiple travel classes on its trains. 1A (First AC) is the most premium with lockable private cabins. 2A (Second AC) has four-berth air-conditioned bays with curtains. 3A (Third AC) is the most popular AC class with six-berth bays. 3E (Third AC Economy) is an affordable AC option available on select trains. SL (Sleeper Class) is a non-AC berth class and the most widely used for overnight journeys. CC (Chair Car) is used in day trains like Shatabdi and Vande Bharat. 2S (Second Sitting) is the most economical non-reserved class for shorter distances. Availability of classes varies by train.
